DATA MINING

The data mining is defined as the nontrivial extraction of implicit information, previously unknown and potentially useful, from data. In the current information society, in which day by day the number of data stored increases almost exponentially, the data mining is a fundamental tool to analyze and exploit them efficiently for the goals of any organization. The data mining is also defined as the analysis and discovery of knowledge from data.

The data mining uses all the techniques bringing useful information, from a simple graphic analysis, through more or less statistic methods, complemented with methods and algorithms of the field of the artificial intelligence and the automatic learning solving the typical problems of automatic clustering, classification, prediction of values, detection of standards, association of attributes, etc. It is, therefore, a multidisciplinary field covering many areas and it has different points of view such as statistics, computing (calculus techniques) or engineering.

Traditionally the techniques of data mining were applied on information contained in data warehouses. However the not structured data mining such as the information contained in text files or text mining, in Internet (web mining), etc. is becoming more and more important nowadays. Besides other needs of operation type, such as the integration of the results get in the systems of online information, with the exigency, therefore, that the processes work practically in real time, for example, early alert in an assembly line, instantaneous detection of fraud in banking operations, a system of recommendation of products in an online shop, etc. Generally the data mining is used to improve the profit of business or industry processes in which great volumes of information structured and stored in databases are managed.

As real pioneers in Spain, at Daedalus we research and work on this field since its origin and we have developed many projects in many fields of application, including insurance, bank and finances, telecommunications, energy, media, distribution, marketing, industry, education, consulting, etc.

A special application of the data mining is the web mining consisting of extracting useful information and knowledge specifically from the activity of a website: traffic analysis (visits and visitors), the most accessed contents, source, type of users, navigators and operating systems, association rules between pages (conversion rate)... At Daedalus we have software components that meet the needs.

In the following white papers you can know more about the concept of data mining and the form in which, at Daedalus, we use this technology in different projects:
