DAEDALUS NEWSLETTER - Nº 4, NOVEMBER, 2009

Dear friends:
As a sign of our intense work through this year, I would like to emphasize three points. The first one is about our activity for the on-line media. Surely, you have heard about the new on-line media company: lainformacion.com. We collaborate in this journalistic initiative with our technology from the very beginning. We are very proud of its successful launching. [Read more]
Maybe you have read about the famous “six degrees of separation”. Network Science arises as a new paradigm for the study of complex systems which are articulated as inter-related entity networks. This discipline is reaching levels of maturity which allow the use of its techniques about analysis and visualization in several sectors. At DAEDALUS, we are developing applications for clients in the Defense industry. [Read more]
Finally, as a sign of our determined bet for innovation in the audiovisual sector, we inform you about the three new projects in which we deal with tasks related to multimedia and multilingual content access. [Read more]
The Spanish Government had just approved a draft of the Sustainable Economy Act. For the time being, it is just a set of measures for trying to sustain the national economy. A sustainable economy should be reached in the long run with education, values and effort. At DAEDALUS, we contribute to sustainable economy by applying the same formula as eleven years ago: by putting our abilities, innovation nature and effort at the disposal of our clients in order to progress in the knowledge society.
Yours faithfully, José Carlos González.
24th September. Juan Kindelán, president of Dixi Media Digital, Mario Tascón, editor of lainformacion.com, and Vanessa Jiménez, director, made the public presentation of lainformacion.com: a new media company which combines the best informative resources by journalists, users and automatic systems. DAEDALUS is being collaborating from the very beginning in the development of the platform, contributing and integrating its technology for news automatic processing, not only from own production but from hundreds of on-line media: classifying them thematically, extracting the meaningful entities (people, organizations, places, etc.), clustering them instantly, deleting duplications from a single source, etc.
DAEDALUS will continue contributing to the support and improvement of the systems that automate the document management of the technical platform that lainformacion.com holds up. We wish the best for this brave company and we had the chance to drink a toast for it in the presentation act.
Network Science is a new and emerging scientific discipline that uses network theory to study similarities between networks in different fields, as information systems, biology or social sciences. This field of science seeks to discover common principles, algorithms and tools that govern network behavior. Network Science is currently an interdisciplinary field in fast evolution due to, among other reasons, the great interest it has awaken because of its application possibilities in telecommunications, economy, biology, transport, etc.
Recently I had the chance of collaborating in the organization of an interesting course about this topic, that was sponsored by the Orange Chair at the Technical University of Madrid. László Barabási (from the Center for Complex Networks Research at Northeastern University in Boston), one of the most important figures in this issue, was among the participants.
At DAEDALUS we have finished yet two projects in the field of intelligence (in every sense, not only in the Defense industry), developing analysis tools for connectivity and network visualization.
Throughout this year, we have started three new projects with public financing in the audiovisual sector: MundoAv (Online Global Platform for Audiovisual Commerce and Industry) is a project led by Telvent, with the participation of Cinevideo20, Corporación Multimedia, Agencia EFE, Technical University of Madrid and DAEDALUS. Media 3.0 (Multimedia and Web 3.0) is a project led by Planet Media, with the participation of Unidad Editorial, Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales, Microgénesis, Secuenzia, El Mundo TV and DAEDALUS. BuscaMedia (Towards a semantic adaptation of multi-network and multi-terminal digital media) is a project led by Atos Origin, with the participation of Activa Multimedia, GFI, INDRA, CCMA, Bilbomática, Fractalia, BMAT, ISID, iSoCo and DAEDALUS.
Public financing for the two first projects comes from the R&D Plan Avanza (Spanish Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism) and for the third one, from the CENIT Program (CDTI, Centro para el Desarrollo Tecnológico Industrial, Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation).
